Shell released in 1970 a series of twenty (sixteen) collectible coins commemorating "Man in Flight “ (LugPioniers), a record of the great events in history of man’s quest to fly. The series was tied-in with American astronaut Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to set foot on the Moon.
Countries got their own version as in South Africa , recognisable for Afrikaans (language) being integrated on the Collection card. South Africa had 20 Tokens to collect.
These are not worth much , but I have a soft spot for these as I can remember trying to convince my old man to actually "not" go to his "Caltex" and rather use Shell... we mostly failed but with time I did get a few ... and of course being given out at fill ups with no idea what you will get, duplicates was in the order of the day and often not the thing you wanted !
On the back of the Collection card you had the description of what each coin was all about . Eg: Charles Lindbergh, 1927.
In 1927, Charles Lindbergh achieved the first solo non-stop transatlantic flight from Long island to Paris in his monoplane The Spirit of St. Louis. The flight lasted 33.5 hours
Here is a link to a fantastic Video of the Man in Flight Series on Youtube.
A full set like this in mint condition can fetch about R500 (Note the word "mint") Tokens/Coins on their own can be between R30 and R50 each...
As a collector I think your Tokens are not complete if you do not have this piece of our recent history ...
Come'on that is so cool !!! TOKENS AT A GARAGE AND ALL ABOUT FLYING ...a little boys dream...so many years ago.
