OK Bazaar

The first OK Bazaars opens on the corner of Eloff and President Street in Johannesburg.


OK Bazaar's 10c

On 25 June 1927, Michael Miller and Sam Cohen opened the first OK Bazaars.


In 1929, OK Bazaars was listed as a public company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and by 1967, OK Bazaars had opened 100 stores.


In 1997, OK Bazaars was bought out by Shoprite Checkers.

About Tokens: These were issued by traders as a discount in cash transactions, and could be used in part or in full payment in later transactions. The purpose was to induce the customer to return to a particular trader for his requirements. Retailer like OK Bazaars issued these staff discount tokens (below) which gave a 10% discount. (ie One Rand would buy One Rand ten cents in the OK Bazaars staff tokens).
