Pretoria Municipality Quarry Token

Updated: Dec 12, 2019

Issued to Native labourer for one weeks work.

The labourer on handing over this token got his money for the week.

Pretoria , the legislative capital of South Africa is named after the trek leader, Andries Pretorius, who moved into the area in about 1848. Some 20 years before that, Mzilikazi had stayed in the area and before then, it was home to the Southern Ndebele of the Manala division. The name of the Municipality, Tshwane, evidently comes from a legendary Manala chief.

Many of these tokens will have an additional hole stamped through them.

In 1853 Marthinus Pretorius, a Voortrekker leader and the first president of the South African Republic, purchased the farms Elandspoort and Koedoespoort and on 16 November 1855 the two farms were declared a town.

Used between 1913 and 1959. Measures approx. 2.8 cm in diameter.

Pretoria became the capital of the South Africa on the 1st of May 1860. The founding of Pretoria as the capital of the South African Republic was seen as end of the Boers’ settlement movements of the Great Trek.

The Pretoria civic arms, (Similar to what is on Token) designed by Dr. Frans Engelenburg, were granted by the College of Arms on 7 February 1907.

They were registered with the Transvaal Provincial Administration in March 1953 and at the Bureau of Heraldry in May 1968. The Bureau provided new artwork, in a more modern style, in 1989.

The arms were : Gules, on an mimosa tree eradicated proper within an orle of eight bees volant, Or, an inescutcheon Or and thereon a Roman praetor seated proper. In layman's terms : a red shield displaying an uprooted mimosa tree surrounded by a border of eight golden bees, superimposed on the tree is a golden shield depicting a Roman praetor. The tree represented growth, the bees industry, and the praetor (judge) was an heraldic pun on the name.

The crest was a three-towered golden castle; the supporters were an eland and a kudu; and the motto Praestantia praevaleat Pretoria as on the Token.
