E K Green was a wine merchant in Simonstown and Kimberley . Somerset road , 71 Long street and 63 Pleinstreet and according to some in the know a few other stores also.
A letter from the manager states that these tokens represented a deposit on a bottle which was refunded when the bottle was returned.
The tokens were worth a cash refund of 1d "as empty bottles when returned were valued at one shilling per dozen".
The tokens were used from 1907 and only withdrawn in about 1930.
There were cardboard varieties of these tokens issued at one stage.
2d - White Cardboard
3d - Green Cardboard. These are fairly rare and not often seen.
Also seen is over stamp which differentiate the different branches. 1 being Somerset rd 2 Long street etc.
